Welcome to New Board member Bob Bowie:

Bob Bowie, Jr. was elected to the Conservancy Board of Directors in June.  A Manor area resident since 2007, he is the founding member, now retired, of the law firm Bowie and Jensen LLC.  The firm practiced business law, including real estate matters.  He is a preservationist and avid fisherman.  We look forward to his  leadership and experience in advocacy, education and community affairs.

Rural Roads Discussions:

Recent efforts by Baltimore County to cut trees along Hess Road resulted in protests from local residents.  The Manor Conservancy and several affected landowners met with representatives of the County to ensure that the rural character and viewscape of Hess Road was not adversely impacted.  Ultimately, the County decided not to cut trees along Hess Road.  Subsequently, meetings with County officials have taken place to discuss the County's adherence to Rural Roads Standards and Policies.  These standards were developed in 2008 with the County to reinforce the rural character of the landscape and to provide design guidance and traffic control for rural roadways in northern Baltimore County. To view the standards, go to:  Rural Roads Standards Adopted.pdf

Cunningham Farm Easement:
Cunningham Farms provided the Maryland Environmental Trust and The Manor Conservancy with a 166 acre perpetual conservation easement of prime agricultural land, woodland, meadow, hedgerow and tree line located along Stockton and Cooper Roads near Phoenix.  A tributary of Greene Branch cuts through the property.  Its agricultural use, stream and forest buffers, scenic vistas, water quality protection and its proximity to many other farms in permanent preservation support its conformance with federal, state and local policy, and its preservation.

Watershed Study:
The Manor Conservancy is participating in a comprehensive study organized by the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy to coordinate preservation efforts by area land trusts, county and state agencies and related groups.   Objectives of this effort include improved coordination of priorities for resource protection.  The study uses geographic information systems and mapping to prioritize tracts of land for conservation.

Fugate Update:

Funding is being sought to recognize and potentially restore the historic Fugate House on Old York Road.  The property owner and the Conservancy requested an overlay easement of the site and immediate surroundings from the Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation which has been approved.  This deed of easement paves the way to seek resources for restoration of the landmark.  A budget and architectural plans have been developed.  The Fugate restoration would add significantly to the public viewscape and historical context of the area. The overlay easement provides for public access with permission from the Conservancy; such access would relate to educational and cultural events appropriate to the site. We will keep you posted with updates and ways you can help with the project.
